Vida y muerte de un pueblo español es considerada, junto a The last time I saw Paris, como la principal obra de Elliot Paul. Publicada originalmente en 1937, hasta la fecha nunca se había traducido al español. La obra es el fruto de la estancia del autor en Santa Eulalia del Río (Ibiza) y constituye un testimonio de enorme valor, comparable en algunos aspectos a la obra de Gerald Brenan.
La primera parte del libro describe la vida en el pueblo: una vida marcada por su clima, su situación y su paisaje privilegiados, por la armonía en la que vivía su gente: un pequeño paraíso. La segunda parte refleja el drama que supuso el estallido de la guerra.
El valor de esta obra es difícil de exagerar. Entre el relato autobiográfico, la crónica social, histórica y antropológica, en ella se encuentra un canto encendido a la civilización mediterránea y a la forma de vida de los ibicencos que conoció Paul en los años 30. El lirismo del relato se alterna con los tonos épicos y elegiacos, constituyendo un valioso y singular testimonio sobre la Guerra Civil, en el que puede verse a Ibiza como un símbolo de España toda, y que cabe leer como añoranza de todo lo que pudo haber sido y se vio truncado por la contienda.
